Before You Leap: Our Free Guide to What to Sort Out Before You Move Abroad

Most people start planning a move abroad with the fun part: picking a place. The harder questions come later. Which documents take weeks to request? What does the IRS still expect from you? Will your health coverage follow you? Does your visa let you keep working?

We put those questions in one place. Before You Leap: What to Sort Out Before You Move Abroad is a free, 19-page guide for U.S. citizens thinking about a long-term stay, Permanent Residency, or citizenship somewhere new. It's printable, it's written in plain language, and it doesn't assume you've already chosen a country.

WHAT'S INSIDE

Start With Your Goal. Long-term stay, Permanent Residency, or citizenship, and why your goal decides which countries make sense.

Know Your Numbers. Income, savings, and a realistic budget range.

Your U.S. Paperwork Checklist. Passports, certified records, background checks, and apostilles.

Money and Taxes. U.S. filing, foreign accounts, banking, and Social Security.

Health Coverage. Why Medicare generally stays home, and your options abroad.

Working Abroad. Why some permits ban even remote work.

Family and Pets. Dependents, schools, and moving with animals.

Scout Before You Commit. How to rehearse your life there, not plan a vacation.

Your Timeline, Your Pace. Explore, decide, prepare, go.

Choosing Where. The factors worth weighing before you narrow your list.

It closes with a resources page of official sites to bookmark.

A FEW THINGS YOU'LL FIND IN IT

Your passport may need more time on it than you think. Many countries require it to be valid at least six months past your arrival or stay, with blank pages.

Foreign bank accounts get reported. If your accounts abroad total more than $10,000 at any point in the year, you file a Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (FBAR), separate from your tax return.

Original Medicare generally doesn't cover care outside the U.S. Many long-stay and residency routes also require proof of health insurance before they'll approve you.

A tourist stay usually isn't a work permit. In some countries, and on some long-stay permits, that includes remote work for a U.S. employer.
